What took me so long?
Like most of us, my history with board gaming has been sparse. Aside from playing Monopoly and Clue in my youth and party games with friends in college, I didn’t think about board games until relatively recently. I was active in other communities, and people recommended certain super-fun board games. I ended up buying my first “modern” board games like Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, Betrayal at House on the Hill, and Stone Age. I played all these games but was too busy in career, family, and life to comprehend the opportunity to be had at the time. Still, I did start slowly collecting more games.
I eventually discovered BoardGameGeek.com (I’ll refer to this site as BGG), the ultimate board gamer’s resource and community, but mostly lurked for several years.
2016 – Joined BoardGameGeek
I finally made an account on BGG in 2016. By that time, I just knew board games were super cool, but it still wasn’t the right time, as I was too addicted to video games. From 2018 through 2021, I ran a popular video game community. After having had such a video game addiction for so long, I completely burned out on video games and would only log into the video game to help with supporting the community. I started interacting a little more with the BGG folks, joining board game Discords and watching YouTube videos on how to play heavier board games. I kept collecting more games at a slightly faster pace.
2021 – Got out of the video game business
Summer of 2021, I gave my business away and took a three-month break to think about my life. I am a hard-working, passionate person who somehow makes my hobby my life. So it was clear to me I had to make board games my priority; when I am consumed with a hobby, I have an innate compulsion to share it with others. A blog about board games was the natural outlet for me, as I love to write, shoot photography, and talk about board games!
I registered a few domain names and chose this one, BlingMyGames.com. I had thought very hard about my niche in the board game community. I think of my games as art and treat them as art, so thus, the board game bling focus. I also happen to love photography, so for sure, this blog will be packed with custom board game photos! I have photo-blogged before, so I know what it takes to build a WordPress blog and the hard work to get it rolling.
2022 – BoardGameBling is here!
In late 2021/early 2022, I studied all the latest about WordPress blogs and new SEO techniques. I even read up on photography, studio lighting and gear. I’m a perfectionist, so it seemed to go slowly and still does, but BlingMyGames is now my priority.
About Me – Kamio
Aside from board games, I also picked up a covid 2020 hobby – succulents. Watering them takes me on average over one hour a day, but it is a time for me to relax and focus on my beautiful plants.
I’ll also always be a life-long learner! I love sites like Udemy, Pluralsight and Skillshare to keep up my programming skills, as I used to be a programmer. Now I’m watching courses on WordPress and photography.
And of course, I love Colorado and the beautiful mountains. Hiking and exploring the natural world will always be part of my life.
